The Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 77 has recently sentenced Anna Liza Catahan, an employer who tortured her household helper Bonita Baran, to life imprisonment.
In 2012, Baran’s case became controversial due to the alleged torture and mistreatment she received from her female employer. According to her, Catahan physically abused her in many ways including burning her skin using a hot iron, smashing her face with dumbbells, piercing her with scissors, letting her eat cockroaches and rotten food, and finally blinding her for life.
Catahan and her husband, Reynaldo Marzan who received 8 to 14 years in prison for being an accomplice and for serious illegal detention, surrendered to the authorities when Baran filed a complaint against them.
The case was then submitted to the Senate wherein Catahan denied all allegations by the household helper. According to her, Baran’s wounds were all self-inflicted.
The PAO Forensic Laboratory decided to investigate what really happened and required the helper to undergo several tests. These tests showed that she sustained more than 200 wounds and bruises on Baran’s body which clearly indicated that she was tortured.
Baran then explained that she wasn’t able to escape from her employer’s house as they always double-locked the doors. She further stated that when they blinded her in 2012, they finally sent her home to her province in Virac, Catanduanes with a brand new television which they have given her.
Still, the abuse that she received from Catahan could not be paid by a mere television which is why she decided to file a complaint against her.
As of the moment, Marzan has 15 days to submit a petition to bail to the Supreme Court. Should they deny his plea, then he will have to spend 8 to 14 years in jail.
Baran expressed how happy she is with the court’s decision. She is also considered as a hero of her time since because of her, the “Kasambahay Law” was created.
